Center for Healthy Eating and Activity Research and Treatment (CHEAR)

The Center for Healthy Eating and Activity Research and Treatment (CHEAR), under the direction of Kerri Boutelle, Ph.D., and Kyung Rhee, M.D., provides family-based treatment for youth who are overweight or obese. We focus on behavioral principles to educate families about nutrition and physical activity, and show them how to make these changes happen.

Children and adolescents who are overweight or obese are at increased risk for many physical conditions, including diabetes, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. These youth also struggle with psychological challenges, including teasing, difficulties focusing and depression. CHEAR is devoted to serving families with children who struggle with their weight, overeating and binge eating.

We offer both clinical research studies and an outpatient clinic. CHEAR also has an Intensive Outpatient Program for families that need more intensive services for children who binge eat and overeat.
