Explore Our Microbiome Initiatives
Through various projects with Rady Children’s, Rob Knight, Ph.D., Rady Children’s endowed chair of microbiome and founding director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation at UC San Diego, seeks to assess how the microbiome is linked to diseases in children, with the goal of improving treatment and diagnosis. Of the top 20 diagnoses at Rady Children’s, 10 have shown plausible links to the microbiome, including cancer, asthma, anxiety and depression. Additionally, Rady Children’s physicians D. Brent Polk, M.D., and George Liu, M.D, Ph.D., are investigating the role of the microbiome in gastroenterology and infectious disease disorders.
Check Out Our MIS-C Clinic
The MIS-C Clinic supports initial and follow-up care for children and teens diagnosed with multisystem inflammatory syndrome, a condition in which children have significant levels of inflammation following exposure to the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, that causes COVID-19. Our team includes three physicians (Jane Burns, M.D., Adriana Tremoulet, M.D. M.A.S., Kirsten Dummer, M.D.) and a registered nurse who specialize in the treatment of KD and MIS-C. Since the recent discovery of MIS-C, Dr. Burns and Dr. Tremoulet have served as global experts on the condition, participating in more than 70 media interviews to date and writing national guidelines for MIS-C.
