Outpatient Behavioral Health Services:

Behavioral Health Urgent Care

The Behavioral Health Urgent Care, offered at the Mid-City Urgent Care location, provides walk-in safety assessments for youth ages 5-21 who are struggling with mental health concerns that pose an imminent risk to their safety, the safety of others, or significantly impair their daily lives.

Short-term return visits and medication services may be available after an initial safety assessment by a clinician during walk-in hours. Please call ahead for any questions.

Eligibility:

    • Any child or youth struggling with mental health-related safety concerns, including self-harm, suicidal thoughts, or homicidal thoughts.
    • For an initial safety assessment, no patient will be turned away based on their inability to pay.
    • Parent/caregiver participation required for all children under the age of 12 and recommended for all children and youth.
    • Child or youth is not at serious immediate risk of safety to self or others.

Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic- and School-Based Services

Rady Children’s Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic and School-Based Services includes a full range of community-based behavioral health services for children, teenagers and transition-aged youth whose functioning is impaired by symptoms from a psychiatric diagnosis. Based on the individualized needs of each young person and family, these clinical programs can include family, individual or group therapy, case management, substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation, crisis intervention and safety planning, psychiatric evaluation and treatment, and medication management. These services are funded through the County of San Diego – Health and Human Services, Behavioral Health Services Agency and is part of Live Well San Diego.

Eligibility:

  • HHSA logo / Live Well San Diego LogoChildren, adolescents and young adults (up to age 21) struggling at home, school or in the community because of a psychiatric diagnosis
  • Have full scope Medi-Cal, residing in San Diego County
  • Child or youth is not at serious immediate risk of safety to self or others

Primary Care Behavioral Health Integration Program

Information for Physicians

The Primary Care Behavioral Health Integration Program is currently offered at select Children’s Primary Care Medical Group and Children’s Physicians Medical Group locations. It is designed to improve the emotional well-being of children and adolescents through conducting early identification screenings, increasing access to behavioral health care, implementing prevention programs and providing evidence-based treatment. This is accomplished through having an integrated health therapist embedded in the primary care office. 


Inpatient and Specialty Care Behavioral Health Services

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services (CAPS)

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services program is an inpatient unit for children and adolescents up to age 18 with psychiatric illness. Comprehensive psychiatric care is provided by a highly experienced team of specialists from UC San Diego School of Medicine and specially trained health professionals from Rady Children’s Hospital. Individualized services include medication management, behavioral programs, specialized therapies, dietary support and recreational therapy.

Eligibility:

  • Any child or youth struggling with urgent emotional and/or behavioral concerns (up to age 18)
  • All healthcare funding-types accepted, including uninsured
  • Parent/caregiver participation required for all children

Eating Disorders/Medical Behavioral Unit

At the Eating Disorders/Medical Behavioral Unit, Rady Children’s Hospital and UC San Diego support children and adolescents with medical conditions accompanied by behavioral or psychological problems, including problems associated with eating disorders. Our experienced team of physicians, dietitians, psychologists, social workers, nurses and psychiatric technicians collaborate with families to use their medical, mental health and behavioral health expertise in the only child and adolescent medical/behavioral inpatient unit in San Diego.

Child Life Services

The Child Life Services Department consists of specially trained clinicians called certified child life specialists (CCLS) who help support patients during their medical visits and hospital stays and encourage a healing environment. Child life specialists assist with procedures and education to help patients and families better understand their treatment and experience. They also promote effective coping and help ensure that there are activities to create a positive experience for the patient and family. Each child life specialist is certified by the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) and is an expert in child development.

Eligibility:

  • Patients of all ages in the following hospital settings: Inpatients Units, Emergency Department, Pre-op/OR, Hem/Onc Clinic, and Radiology Clinic
  • Interventions vary based off diagnosis, procedure, age, developmental level, etc.

Medical Social Work

The Medical Social Work team is an important part of the multidisciplinary care received at Rady Children’s Hospital and its clinics.  Social workers are available when patients/families experience social and emotional needs. Our experienced team provides support, education, crisis intervention, brief therapy, safety planning, advocacy and referrals to community resources and are at the heart of care coordination.

Eligibility:

  • Referrals are welcomed by patients, family members and members of the care team, including primary providers and specialty providers.
  • Social work referrals are encouraged regardless of insurance provider/lack of insurance.

Pediatric Psychiatry Consultation Liaison Service

The Pediatric Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service provides inpatient psychiatric consultation, evaluation and treatment related to the psychological adjustment of children and families with acute and chronic medical and mental illnesses such as:

  • Medical-psychiatric diagnoses
  • Coping in the context of medical illness
  • Organ transplantation
  • Medical sequelae of a primary psychiatric disorder
  • Chronic pain
